My artist statement

Most of the ideas that have inspired me to create my panel were to search or organic, aquatic, life forms but also try to create a unified theme within the overall composition. I was visually attracted to fish scales for my microcosm observation. For the Fibonacci sequence I’ve chosen the Mollusk shell and as my macrocosm section I’ve created a surrealism scenery involving focus mostly on making the objects in the image larger than the subjects themselves. I wanted to create an environment in which the subjects looked as if they traveled from a long distance to arrive to this whole new world  to create a fresh start. In the process of creating this piece I wanted to show the aesthetics of how beautiful the beach could look from a much smaller scale. The area of lights and dark value steer the viewer’s eye through the foreground, middle, and background while also showing the light source on each form and while everything is receding into space. On the other hand, I feel my work shows the symbolism of rebirth and prosperity by using the seashells which also relates to the narrative of the piece since the idea is to start anew. Some of the problems that occurred with the medium for the panels was to create a dramatic shift in between each color while using a monochromatic scale and at times the paint had to be remoisten. One of the main things I have enjoyed about this project was it allowed to me to be able to create an imaginative theme but also showing a sense of control by using actual organic pieces.

Final project finally complete!

I finally finished my master piece and it was a complete success, I really enjoyed working with the theme I had in mind and the project it self. I managed to show my work process & with the help of someone else as well :) I really enjoyed this project to end off the class with!

Homework #5

Kimberly Torres
11/27/12

                                                                      Design Basics

  1. The painting personal values by Rene Magritte shows Surrealism with size and proportions by showing different personal items within the space. The objects themselves are all have different sized proportions but will confuse the viewer at first glance because objects that are normally small in real life are portrayed large while others are shrunken.
  2. The ideal geometry in a composition is like a ratio that give the "measurement" to an object in relation to something next to it. this measurement would follow the rules of the canon, which was also the perfect measurement for the ideal figure. An example of this would be the human figure which requires  the use of exact proportions.
  3. The Golden Rectangle or "Golden Mean" is a ratio between length and width but also the proportions could also be found in growth patterns in nature such as plants, a shell, and of the human body. This same thing can relate to the Fibonacci Sequence which is also be found in the golden mean, is a series of numbers which is the sum of the previous two.
  4. These three ideas combined is are the source of my final project which is panel the includes microcosm, macrocosm, and the Fibonacci Sequence. My inspiration for my panel was to have an aquatic theme but instead of using the typical fish and seaweed images depicted in this theme, i thought i'd use a seashells and a shoreline scenery. I wanted to play with the space and have it appear as thought its is a new found land that people have traveled to see it.

Scientific Surrealism Lanscape

The reference images that I've picked for the panel are things that were things from sea life and from the beach. The reason I've picked these images in particular because I imagined having a aquatic theme to my image but also including a mollusk since the from of the shell clears shows the Fibonacci sequence.

Completed Concept boards/Surrealism Landscape

Ive chosen color because besides liking color but also the references Ive chosen we images of art supplies ( color pencils ), watercolor experiments, and things within nature that contain color.
The principle Ive chosen was curvilinear and the images that have portrayed something with a curvilinear edge were mostly furniture and other abstract works of art.
The artist Ive chosen is Beatriz Milhazes and the images within the panel show her work including cutouts of her work and an experimental image of an image of her in bitmap mode.
My idea behind my surrealism landscape was to show a sense of depth perception with a vortex style  space.

As part of one of the few projects we were assigned to do, had to consist of creating four panels, three showing element, and artist, and a principle. The last panel was a surrealism landscape created in Photoshop by using images online and collaging them together to create one whole image.

Painting in grayscale. . .

So last Thursday in the studio, we were given an assignment to find an interesting shape and do a grayscale painting from it by zooming in to the image and abstracting it. The object I chose we're antique gold bangles that I was wearing that day. I thought it'll be a good idea to use them because they since they were embellished, they had already contained some existing shapes to work with. The image shows Professor Ujiie explaining/demonstrating how would have to create this.

Our Collage Assignment

So yesterday in class we did a informal critique on our collage panels, and the concept behind these was to show asymmetrical grid balance with a focal point, symmetrical gird balance, radial balance, and biomorphic image or self-portrait by using ripped pieces of magazine paper. What was interesting about this assignment was that it was challenge to try to show two different type of grid balances without ever having seen and example of this before. When seeing everyone else's work on the wall really motivated me to want to improve more on mine. I really loved Stacey's and Sam's self-portrait collage because they really created a likeness of themselves with the collaging technique.

Homework #4 Artwork Choice

This was a really interest piece to fond because it experiments with texture and medium. The table top appears to show tactile texture since the artists has created a representation of wood grain. Tromp L’oile is also with this piece because at first glance at the table it only appears to be a smooth surface until seen up close. Since the wood grain varies or looks the same, it contains a sense of patterns because of the lines formations. The second picture on the bottom contains mixed-media since the bottom uses wood for the base of the table while the top uses acrylic. I believe that this table’s surface would be good for using it for frottage because of its textured surface. The table would also appear to have visual texture but since the object is three dimensional, it can actually be felt.
Japanese design studio Nendo installed their pieces, title “textured transparencies”, in Galleria Jannone during fashion week 2011. Their collection of pieces mostly included tables and lights which explored different levels of transparency. Each of the pieces where created from different materials to show new and different visual functions in furniture.

Homework #4

Kimberly Torres

10/30/12

                                                             Homework #4

Chapter 9 Vocabulary words:

1. pattern - a repetitive design or giving an empty area or space visual interest
2. tactile texture - texture that can be felt
3. collage - a technique in which pieces of paper or objects are pasted down to to make a design or pattern
4. verisimilitude - creating the same patterns or textures where they don't really exist
5. visual texture - where texture is mostly visual and cannot be touched
6. frottage - rubbings
7. trompe l'oel - a french term meaning "to fool the eye"

1. three ways to define a pattern are adding visual interest to an are or empty space, repeated shapes or marks, dynamic visual interest
2. most patterns in grid form can show a sense of balance and order
3. the differences and similarities with pattern and texture are pattern is usually defined as a repetitive design and motif, texture as well but not with the same perfection. texture would be identified by touch  yet at the same time appear as pattern as well
4. texture can be used to give visual interest by variation of dark to light patterns, surface quality like such as smooth and rough objects, when an artist purposely exploits contrasts in surface
5. the difference between actual and implied texture is actual texture, or implied texture, can be felt whereas implied texture is purposely made to have a rough 3-Dimensional surface
6. a collage is where pieces of paper or other materials/objects are pasted together to create a design or pattern for example, Anne Ryan's collages made of cloth.
7. Trompe L'oile is a form of visual texture that objects are done with delineated and meticulous care and also show a visual pattern on each object

Chapter 12 Vocabulary words:

1. value - from light to dark
2. value contrast - the relation ship between light and dark
3. value pattern - the arrangement of light and dark depending on colors used
4. value emphasis - high dark and light contrast pulls the viewer in
5. chiaroscuro -  a device used to draw lights and dark in to show depth and in both drawing and paintings
6. aerial - atmospheric
7. shading - the use of value in a work of art
8. cross-hatching - a technique in which lines are draw in a back and forth motion, used to represent various grays
9. mixed-media - where two different medias are used in a work of art

1. value is from light to dark and value scale is that shows a representation of value
2. achromatic scale only consists of mixtures of black and white
3. value contrast refers to the relationship between dark and light for example, depending on what background is being used for the grey circle, it may either appear light or dark
4. balance can be created in a composition with value by varying the amount of lights and darks within an image
5. emphasis can be achieved with value by using more dark colors instead of lights for example, using a lot of black can give a more bold effect such colors are used in Susan Moore's mixed media on paper which she used more black to emphasize more of her curves
6. chiaroscuro was used to describe the artistic device used of using light and dark to imply depth and volume in a painting or drawing and during the renaissance was when the word was first used
7. aerial/atmospheric perspective is when far-off objects visually become less distinct and are absorbed into the atmosphere as the distance increases for example, this is more commonly used in landscapes paintings.

My creative process

So in class on Thursday, we had to created implied and actual textures and so far this was my process with my textures and I was mostly just experimenting with some if my organic materials that I've brought to class with me. I have not yet painted over what I've pasted down but I will soon :)

geometric food art by sakir gökçebag

I thought this artist's works was interesting since he used a very unique medium: Fruit. This artist, sakir gökçebag, is a Turkish artist who takes fruits and vegetables and rearranges them in various patterns and shapes. The images above may appear to be digitally altered but, are in fact cut very precisely and photographed to make the straight edges more apparent and show how the formation of the fruits show circle formations.

Quote by Famous Artist

Art is the only way to run away without leaving home. — Twyla Tharp

I had really taken an interest in this quote by Twyla Tharp because people use art as a means to escape reality and dwell into a world they envision. Besides it being used to show ones interpretation of something, some people use art to get away from the problems simply by placing it on paper.

ARART App.

So today I came across this video on the Design Boom website and it really caught my attention because it's about this app developed by kei shiratori, takeshi mukai and younghyo bak. This app that they have created is suppose to take well known drawings and paintings and visually alter them into real-time virtual animations. I thought this app could also be interesting to use when you want to see how a work of art uses move or sense of direction. This app is also available in the app store on your iPad so check it and tell me what you this :)

My Fire/Water Completed!

So after 6hrs of doing this I finally finished the panel last night. I was a bit skeptical of posting the image on the blog since I just wanted to wait until everyone saw it at school but I still wanted to show my progress. I hope I get a good grade on this since the detailing was very very tedious. But all I have to do is mount it :) then ta da!

My Fire/Water Panel Process

So far this is almost done. Still working on it as we speak and just need to add more details.

New York Metropolitan Museum Trip

So last week we went the whole first year foundation group went to the metropolitan museum and I found the trip to be amazing! while I was there, I seem to have found my most favorite place in the museum: The Temple of Dender :) I wish I could've taken more photos of the exhibit but I wouldn't of been able to capture its large scale but I have included some of the few paintings that have caught my attention :)

New York Met Museum Trip Assignment

Kimberly Torres
10/1/12

One of the two pieces of artwork that has caught my attention while i had visited the
Metropolitan Museum of art is a painting done by James Rosenquist, titled House Of Fire and another
painting done by an artist named Clifford Still who's piece is untitled. I believe both the artists are trying to convey some type of emotion from the viewer. Both of these paintings appear to be Kinesthetic since when i first seen these paintings, they made me have the sensation to touch the pattern of objects that were within them. In James Rosenquist painting, I feel like he wants to show the average life of women but also showing some kind of hardship she might have to go through. The main focal point of  this image would have to be some sort of bucket like object but what also makes this the focal point is it's use of red which makes it more eye catching. This piece also has have a sense of Harmony since this image uses a monochromatic color scheme. what I also find eye catching about this image is it's Gestalt since the image contains objects that are more or so obvious as opposed to being abstracted.

The second painting appears to be eye catching just the same since it uses contrast and a large scale size. This painting is also a good example of a Non-objective work of art since there is no apparent subject matter. I believe that is painting was trying to express and emotion to and from the viewer. when i first looked at this piece, i didn't receive a very good vibe from it because of the large use of black in the center of the image. What made this a successful abstract work of art was its use of  Equivocal space and Continuity which shows visual unity since the painting uses the same line quality throughout the whole image.

Homework #3 work of art

The work of art I’ve chosen is by an unknown photographer done in the 1930s. This photo shows a successful use of radial symmetry since all of the men are neither placed in a perfect circle nor crooked.  This also uses positive and negative shapes in a way since all of the men are wearing black suits, and in contrast, are placed in a light background which is also visual appealing. I've also thought this was a successful work of art because of the position the men are in, it gives them a curvilinear shape since they're all held in a circular form.
Since they're place in type of symmetry, they are also using horizontal balance since the weight of the shape starts from top to bottom instead of reverse. This photograph does not show  one-point perspective, it does give the illusion but, it does In fact show depth by it's size.

Homwork #3 definitions

                                                              Homework #3

Chapter 5/8: Balance/ Shape and Volume
1. The difference between balanced and imbalanced work is that humans we are instinctively more comfortable with a balanced environment/composition but when we notice something imbalanced we tend to avoid it or not look at it.
2. Artists mostly use horizontal placement but refer to vertical placement as well. Since horizontal placement  uses an equilibrium of gravity, it becomes of visual interest because we are used to seeing more weight towards the bottom then the top.
3. Symmetrical balance is when like shapes are repeated on the same sides on either side of a vertical axis. A perfect example of this is would be Diego Rivera's painting “El Vendedor De Alcatraces”.
4. Asymmetrical balance can be achieved by with objects that aren't similar but have equal visual weight or visually appealing. Value such as black against white is more noticeable than white and gray. Color is also good at composition and emphasis because there is balance achieved when there's a large portions of shapes on either side of the center axis. Texture could also add interest instead of something that appears smooth.
5. Radial balance is is neither symmetrical or asymmetrical balance but rather a type of symmetry that's in between depending on whether the focus occurs in the middle or off the center.
6. A good example of a piece of artwork is a piece done by James Gurney called “Ebulon”. This painting shows a successful use of asymmetrical symmetry.
7. A shape is usually an area enclosed by a line or by color or value changes on its outer edge while volume and mass are usually associated with three dimensional shapes.
8. Naturalism is a work of art such as a portrait that uses reasonable proportions and a given likeness. Distortion are exaggerated shapes that are stretched and altered in proportions.

Chapter 8: Shape and Volume
1. Non-Objective are shapes with no subject matter suggestion.
2. Curvilinear  is an object or line that flows along a curved plane or design that may be functional or aerodynamic.
3. Rectilinear is a term used to describe forms that have sharp edges or have an angular feel.
4. Positive and negative shapes is a visual effect that is caused because of its placement within the format.

Chapter 10:
1. three ways artist used to show depth is by size, overlapping, and vertical location.
2. One-point perspective is when an image shows the illusion of depth by an horizon line and vanishing points.
3. Two-point perspective is shown when two objects are parallel to each other or viewed at an angle.
4. Isometric projection is usually used in engineering drawings and gives a sense of three dimensions without forshortening.
5. Equivocal space is a visual pattern that uses overlapping of shapes.

Starting my actual fire/water drawing on my bristol board.
My thought process for my fire/water panel. So far i've broken down the image into three parts just to get the fine details in. Now the real drawing begins :) wish me luck!

Monday, September 17, 2012

One of the three panels I've completed. This before it was mounted. Ive been calling this print pattern "psychedelic zebra" so I thinks that's what I'm going to name it. Lol :)
Yesterday night doing my thumbnail image for my fire/water panel :)

Friday, September 14, 2012

These three images had caught my attention because they ALL show a different depiction of line weight variation and show a different quality of line such as, curvalinar, light to dark, and shape & line.

Write the name of the artist, and the date it was made!

Vocabulary words

What is a focal point and list three ways to achieve it?
Focal point is when an element is emphasized so so it can attract attention and draw the
viewer in more to look. Three ways Focal point can be achieved is through emphasis, contrast,
and isolation.

List at least three types of rhythm and explain how it can help unify a piece of art?
Rhythm can be seen in repetition because repetition is an element that gives visual unity. It's also shown with contrast and shape variation. Alternating rhythm and progressive rhythm will help unify a piece since they both have to with repetition within a work of art.

What is kinesthetic rhythm?
When a visual piece stimulates one of our five senses.

What is the definition of a line?
A line only consists of the dimensions of its length but when used in art, it also involves width
As well.

Contour
When line is used to follow the edges of forms to describe their outlines.

Gesture
These are not drawings of objects but they mostly focus on movement, weight, and posture.
This style of drawing is done very quickly and it shows the momentary changing of the subject
As opposed to focusing on each form.

Implied line
Is created by positioning points so the eye goes automatically to them, like the dotted line.

Explicit line
These lines are are obvious within an image.

Lost and found line
In a work or art an object or body part is revealed by a sharp contour, but the edge disappears
Into darkness.

Line as direction
Horizontal lines implies something going straight across, a vertical line such as a standing
Body, and diagonal line shows motions such as active movements.

Psychic Line
There is no actual physical line or representation of one but we feel a mental connection
between two elements. This usually happens when something looks of points in a direction.

Line as texture and pattern
Cross hatching is a way to show texture and show dimensions within an object because of the
Series of lines close together.

I found this piece to be very successful towards some of the terms because being a three dimensional, this also shows a good form of line as well. This structure of the piano shows contouring because it shows the basic form of the piano without showing the keys or any other details to show the obvious. This shows a good variation of line since the wires for this go from thick to thin. Since this has thick, obvious, dark lines, this is also an example of explicit line because they're visible. The wires that are protruding out of the piano give them a sense of direction because they're going diagonal, horizontal, and vertical.

The name of the artist that has created this is Fritz Panzer. This is one out of his six other sculpture that are located in the Alberta Pane gallery located in Paris. His thought behind his work is to show three dimensional contour drawings with a gossamer like style. He wants the view to use memory to perceive the object associated with everyday seen objects. http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/10/view/23390/3d-wire-sculptures-by-fritz-panzer.html
Everyone's getting busy! ( a few of these faces are priceless lol ^_^ )
