Homework #3 work of art

The work of art I’ve chosen is by an unknown photographer done in the 1930s. This photo shows a successful use of radial symmetry since all of the men are neither placed in a perfect circle nor crooked.  This also uses positive and negative shapes in a way since all of the men are wearing black suits, and in contrast, are placed in a light background which is also visual appealing. I've also thought this was a successful work of art because of the position the men are in, it gives them a curvilinear shape since they're all held in a circular form.
Since they're place in type of symmetry, they are also using horizontal balance since the weight of the shape starts from top to bottom instead of reverse. This photograph does not show  one-point perspective, it does give the illusion but, it does In fact show depth by it's size.

Homwork #3 definitions

                                                              Homework #3

Chapter 5/8: Balance/ Shape and Volume
1. The difference between balanced and imbalanced work is that humans we are instinctively more comfortable with a balanced environment/composition but when we notice something imbalanced we tend to avoid it or not look at it.
2. Artists mostly use horizontal placement but refer to vertical placement as well. Since horizontal placement  uses an equilibrium of gravity, it becomes of visual interest because we are used to seeing more weight towards the bottom then the top.
3. Symmetrical balance is when like shapes are repeated on the same sides on either side of a vertical axis. A perfect example of this is would be Diego Rivera's painting “El Vendedor De Alcatraces”.
4. Asymmetrical balance can be achieved by with objects that aren't similar but have equal visual weight or visually appealing. Value such as black against white is more noticeable than white and gray. Color is also good at composition and emphasis because there is balance achieved when there's a large portions of shapes on either side of the center axis. Texture could also add interest instead of something that appears smooth.
5. Radial balance is is neither symmetrical or asymmetrical balance but rather a type of symmetry that's in between depending on whether the focus occurs in the middle or off the center.
6. A good example of a piece of artwork is a piece done by James Gurney called “Ebulon”. This painting shows a successful use of asymmetrical symmetry.
7. A shape is usually an area enclosed by a line or by color or value changes on its outer edge while volume and mass are usually associated with three dimensional shapes.
8. Naturalism is a work of art such as a portrait that uses reasonable proportions and a given likeness. Distortion are exaggerated shapes that are stretched and altered in proportions.

Chapter 8: Shape and Volume
1. Non-Objective are shapes with no subject matter suggestion.
2. Curvilinear  is an object or line that flows along a curved plane or design that may be functional or aerodynamic.
3. Rectilinear is a term used to describe forms that have sharp edges or have an angular feel.
4. Positive and negative shapes is a visual effect that is caused because of its placement within the format.

Chapter 10:
1. three ways artist used to show depth is by size, overlapping, and vertical location.
2. One-point perspective is when an image shows the illusion of depth by an horizon line and vanishing points.
3. Two-point perspective is shown when two objects are parallel to each other or viewed at an angle.
4. Isometric projection is usually used in engineering drawings and gives a sense of three dimensions without forshortening.
5. Equivocal space is a visual pattern that uses overlapping of shapes.

Starting my actual fire/water drawing on my bristol board.
My thought process for my fire/water panel. So far i've broken down the image into three parts just to get the fine details in. Now the real drawing begins :) wish me luck!

One of the three panels I've completed. This before it was mounted. Ive been calling this print pattern "psychedelic zebra" so I thinks that's what I'm going to name it. Lol :)
Yesterday night doing my thumbnail image for my fire/water panel :)

These three images had caught my attention because they ALL show a different depiction of line weight variation and show a different quality of line such as, curvalinar, light to dark, and shape & line.

Write the name of the artist, and the date it was made!

Vocabulary words

What is a focal point and list three ways to achieve it?
Focal point is when an element is emphasized so so it can attract attention and draw the
viewer in more to look. Three ways Focal point can be achieved is through emphasis, contrast,
and isolation.

List at least three types of rhythm and explain how it can help unify a piece of art?
Rhythm can be seen in repetition because repetition is an element that gives visual unity. It's also shown with contrast and shape variation. Alternating rhythm and progressive rhythm will help unify a piece since they both have to with repetition within a work of art.

What is kinesthetic rhythm?
When a visual piece stimulates one of our five senses.

What is the definition of a line?
A line only consists of the dimensions of its length but when used in art, it also involves width
As well.

Contour
When line is used to follow the edges of forms to describe their outlines.

Gesture
These are not drawings of objects but they mostly focus on movement, weight, and posture.
This style of drawing is done very quickly and it shows the momentary changing of the subject
As opposed to focusing on each form.

Implied line
Is created by positioning points so the eye goes automatically to them, like the dotted line.

Explicit line
These lines are are obvious within an image.

Lost and found line
In a work or art an object or body part is revealed by a sharp contour, but the edge disappears
Into darkness.

Line as direction
Horizontal lines implies something going straight across, a vertical line such as a standing
Body, and diagonal line shows motions such as active movements.

Psychic Line
There is no actual physical line or representation of one but we feel a mental connection
between two elements. This usually happens when something looks of points in a direction.

Line as texture and pattern
Cross hatching is a way to show texture and show dimensions within an object because of the
Series of lines close together.

I found this piece to be very successful towards some of the terms because being a three dimensional, this also shows a good form of line as well. This structure of the piano shows contouring because it shows the basic form of the piano without showing the keys or any other details to show the obvious. This shows a good variation of line since the wires for this go from thick to thin. Since this has thick, obvious, dark lines, this is also an example of explicit line because they're visible. The wires that are protruding out of the piano give them a sense of direction because they're going diagonal, horizontal, and vertical.

The name of the artist that has created this is Fritz Panzer. This is one out of his six other sculpture that are located in the Alberta Pane gallery located in Paris. His thought behind his work is to show three dimensional contour drawings with a gossamer like style. He wants the view to use memory to perceive the object associated with everyday seen objects. http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/10/view/23390/3d-wire-sculptures-by-fritz-panzer.html
Everyone's getting busy! ( a few of these faces are priceless lol ^_^ )

Line mounts

So I'm just getting started in the process of finishing up my line compositions. Hopefully I'll finish mounting them today.

Homework: Design Basics / Line Qualities

Define:

visual unity:

when the whole must be seen over the obivious parts of the image. Some parts may seem like they belong to bring the image together, but if you only notice the smaller parts of the whole then it lacks unity.

Gestalt:

A design or pattern that cannot be understood with its obvious given visual elements

Harmony:

Elements within a design that look as though they belong together or have come together by mere chance.

List and define at least 6 ways to achieve visual unity, and explain each one:
(you can draw a little diagram too, if you want to)

Proximity: is when an image makes separate elements look as if they belong together by simply puttying them close together. You can achieve proximty through use or light and dark values, proportion when ever things a larger up close and gradually becoming smaller, collaging images together.

Continuity: something that continues within a design, such as a line, an edge, or a direction from one form to another. Continuity can be seen in figurative drawing, tesselations, a grouping of images that have the same subject matter but different style of the subject, griding technique, they could also be seen on company labels.

repetition: something that repeats in various parts of the design to relate the parts to each other. Ex: color, shape, texture, direction, or an angle. This can be seen in in nature or in natural sculptures, themes within an image, repetition of line direction such as diagonals, manipulation of space, similar strokes or textures.

emphasis: when including repetition and variety, this shows more of what element is used such as color or form. This is shown when something is heavier in size, darker in color, a balance between dominant and weaker forms, using a focal point for the viewers eye to focus on, when something in a design stands out.

chaos and control: without unity, an image or design can become chaotic or “unreadable”. Without some elements of variety, an image becomes uniteresting or lacks something. When a design has too much going on at once, colors are to bright and conflicting, the design is dull,

the grid: gives visual unity with the element of repetition, but when a slight change of color/value or change in shape makes it more intresting to the viewer. This would be used for textile patterens, print patterns, collages, checkerboard pattern, internet websites, and articles.

This shoe uses the basics of form, line, and color. These three things are what make up the basis of this shoe but when you see it from the perspective of unity and its correspondent’s, then you’ll begin to see the more in depth features of the shoe. The intricate stitching on the shoe shows repetition in the circles, since there are circles within circles. The texture on them plays a key role because the material makes the form of the shoes more unique. What also makes these shoes interesting to look at is the color scheme being used. Since all of the colors being used are very vibrant or “loud”, it gives this shoe chaos and control since there’s a lot going on with the shoe.
“The Grid” technique was possibly used for these shoes to show off the pattern that was used on the shoes. These shoes intricate stitching resembles a woven basket or a wicker chair and with the bright color scheme it draws in more attention for it to be noticeable. This object and another one of the shoes created by the artist Olek will show proximity since they all resemble each other one way or more and putting them will create a sense of unity. Continuity is also very prominent because with this shoe and long with the others that were created all share the same design, subject matter, and medium used.
"Achieving unity in your compositions will only result from practicing, knowing and selecting the right visual elements and using the best principles of design to relate them."

I chose this quote in particular because when you first try to use this concept, it is pretty tricky to know exactly how to utilize each element. while using these elements you would have to know the difference between each of the elements such as: Balance, Movement, Emphasis, Contrast, etc.
As you practice with these one of the key things to remember is individual elements within as work of art should not be competing for attention and the main theme that is used should be understood very clearly.

My Henna

Just recently I've been wearing and also doing my own henna designs. I started doing thing because the process is actually quiet relaxing once you get the hang on using the henna but also it's also beautiful to wear. this incorporates with the class because since this IS a design, some aspects of it use the principles of unity. this one in particular uses balance since i placed the flowers in two different spots on my hand and the amount of flowers i used also plays a big part in this. this is also one of the few that I've done, i will possibly post more pictures up of my other designs in the future.

The The use of line in three different forms. I actually like the first one because of how the use of line, from thick to thin, gives the plants some detail without any cross hatching or line detail.

Uploading pictures on our blogs for the first time :)

Hey everybody! this is my First post from my blog ( except for the photo I posted lol) it's going to look depressing until Thursday, till' then ENJOY :D
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY camera time! lol.
